Tom Pierce talks about Executive Coaching

Q How would I begin an Executive Coaching relationship?

T The same way you begin every important interaction. With a conversation.

We both need to clarify:

  • who you are, and who you want to be.
  • where you are, and where you want to go.
  • who or what started you along this path?
  • who or what is stopping you from reaching your destination?

Q So that’s all there is to it?

T Not quite. Before we go any further, you’ll need to pass "Tom’s Test."

There are only five questions, but your answer to each question must be “Yes”:

  1. Are you facing a career or workplace challenge that will require change?
  2. Do you recognize that challenge?
  3. Are you committed to work hard to change?
  4. Do you think that Executive Coaching can be an important part of the solution?
  5. Do you feel that Tom Pierce has the competence and the chemistry to be your coach?

Q Tom, explain your coaching process.

T Every one of my clients has unique needs that may even vary from one coaching session to the next, depending on what has changed. After I help a person discover his or her desired outcome, then we’ll determine—together—the best way to get there.

Here are a few of my trade secrets. Don’t tell.

  • I ask questions.
  • I listen to the answers.
  • I think about what we’ve learned.
  • I ask more questions.
  • I listen to more answers.

After you and I work together to “connect the dots,” I’ll recommend practical changes in how you think about a situation, what your next action step should be, the probable result you can expect, and ways to measure your success. My guidance is based on a blend of experience, intuition, and innovation observing and managing human behavior in the workplace for four decades.

Q That’s it?

T Not quite. Our ultimate goal is to achieve the desired outcome. To get there, each client and I work to develop:

  • A Personal Strategic Plan
  • Tactics and tools that work… that you can put to work right away

Q What does it cost to work with you, Tom?

T Because every client’s needs are unique, every Pierce Management Development coaching contract is based on the time and tactics required to meet those needs. One executive might be in the middle of a crisis and require week-to-week coaching, while another executive might be working steadily toward a long-term career change.

Our typical executive coaching contract is for one year with a monthly retainer fee. The contract could include, for example, one monthly telephone coaching session, a couple brief follow-up phone calls when necessary, and emailed reflections and resources between sessions.

Testimonials

After many successful years involved with government relations at an association, I asked Tom Pierce to help me develop a viable career plan. Tom recommended a long-term strategy, but he also coached me on the most effective way to interview with a prospective employer. I went on to land a top management position with one of the premier government relations consulting practices in the nation.
